The Co-Sign

DJ Slugo Co Sign

An Exclusive with the Legendary DJ Slugo

One of the originators of Ghetto House music, a genre of dance music that dominated the south side of Chicago since the late 80’s, DJ Slugo is releasing his first ever executive-produced EP, “The Co-Sign”.

he Co-Sign is a vinyl released album containing six tracks with unique album art and an exclusive DVD of interviews with over 20+ Ghetto House legends including Gant-Man, DJ Puncho, DJ Chip, and the infamous DJ Deeon.

What makes the album art so unique?

Ghetto House is a signature genre of music created by Chicago DJ’s and producers. Slugo wanted to create an album that was authentic to the ghetto house community and in doing so, he got the creators and pioneers to “Co-Sign” the album. On the front cover are signatures from every DJ and producer that is a part of the Ghetto House community. Slugo went personally to each individual DJ/Producer and they signed a notebook. A graphic designer infused each signature into the unique cover design.

Vinyl vs. Digital?

Control your product--Once your record is out there digitally, it’s out there everywhere, and you lose control and count of the unit sold/distributed.

“Control your product”, said Slugo. Although digital is easier financially to produce, Slugo advices, "Once your record is out there digitally, it’s out there everywhere, and you lose control and count of the unit sold/distributed."He added,“I want to take it back to the old mix tape days where we controlled everything. It’s not about the bread; it’s about controlling my masters. Control how many is out there. It makes the record more valuable as a limited release, because it will never come out digitally. I want this to be a collector’s item.”

What influenced the tracks?

Although Slugo is utilizing an old school median to release “The Co-Sign”, the creativity in producing is of the future. “Juke on Live (I Came to Work This Mutha)” is a ground breaking track that was created with the technology of social media. While on Facebook Live, Slugo recorded the track live while rap artists spit bars. He Said,“I was speaking with an old high school friend name Coco. She describe an incident to me. It was so funny out came "Walk Up On Coco". It’s a total of 6 tracks on the album. Slugo explained, "While in the car I’ll record on my phone and build a beat around the a cappella. I get in the zone while in the studio and produce.”
